The idea of an Old Age Home with in the municipal limits of Amritsar, as mooted by S.Onkar Singh Sandhu was duly discussed with his friends colleagues and relatives, which was not only appreciated, but consented to be executed by one and all. In order to transform the idea into reality, initiate fund raising, negotiate purchase of land and to take care and manage other service projects a trust under the name and style of Vishvkarma Welfare Trust was constituted and got registered with the competent authority in the Government as a non political, non religious & charitable service organisation.

Objectives:
Activities and objectives of the Trust are ennumerated asunder:
(a) Setting up and running of Old age home
(b) Setting up and running of Charitable Hospital general and or speciality
(c) Setting up and running of educational institutions
(d) Helping the deserving students belonging to the less fortunate strata of society in the pursuance of education.
(e) Helping the needy and deserving parents to solemnize the marriages of their daughters.
(f) Helping the orphans and deserving widows in their rehabilitation.
(g) Helping the handicapped in their rehabilitation
(h) Rendering suitable financial and or manual assistance to the society effected by natural calamities.
(i) Arranging blood and eye donations and to undertake projects connected with environment and rich heritage at district, state or national level.

Founder

A writer by inclination. conserver of heritage by passion and a philanthropist by conviction, Sardar Onkar Singh Sandhu, Harjindra wale, a leading Industrialist of Amritsar, engaged in manufacturing corrugated board and Box Making Machinery by profession is an embodiment of simplicity, dignity, integrity and believes in equality and the brotherhood of mankind. S. Sandhu is always ready to help the needy. Less fortunate and deserving members of society in solemnising the marriages of their daughters, for the education of their wards or for their own medical treatment etc. etc.

As a writer, his serial Veehvin Sadi De Anmol Heere, detailing therein life of Ramgarhia celebrities, appear in various papers like Ramgarhia Parliament, Ramgarhia Manch, Vishavkarma Prachark, Daler Khalsa, Man sarowar and others. On heritage front, he could get the names of Chatiwind Gate and Ghee Mandi Gate Amritsar renamed as these were called in the nineteenth century i.e Ramgarhia Gate & Ahiuwalia Gate respectively and the Katra Ramgarhian. Design for these Gates have already been approved. Efforts are, however, afoot for fund raising and construction of these Gates.

A notice board displaying brief history of Ramgarhia bunga in English and Punjabi could be installed in the perambulatory path of Darbar Sahib for the benefit of visitors and devotees. He is also vigorously pursuing for the release of a commemorative postal stamp in memory of Maharaja Jassa Singh Ramgarhia with the concerned Deptt. in the Central Government.

Towards his philanthropist pursuits, S. Sandhu, mooted the idea of an Old Age Home in Amritsar, being a necessity to serve the senior citizens, who are left all alone due to various reasons and provide them with suitable shelter and care.
